Several years ago, a few members of our staff had the privilege of hearing Dr. Viv Grigg, author and missionary to the urban poor in the Philippines, share thoughts from his book Companion to the Poor. He helped us explore our role and responsibility as Christians in relating to the poor. For the past few years we have considered his five points and added an additional sixth point. Join us this Lenten season as we explore these thoughts with you through a series of six devotionals. We trust these Six Principles for Life will be as challenging, inspiring and motivating to you as they have been to us!
Principle of the Week: Earn Much
Scripture: Genesis 13
Personal Study
Is it wrong for a Christian to earn much or be wealthy? How does it make you feel to talk about Christians being wealthy? Let’s look at the scriptures.
Read Genesis 13. In what areas had Abram become wealthy?
How is Abram’s wealth evidenced in verse 6?
How did Abram become wealthy? Where did his wealth come from? (see Genesis 12:2-3; 13:14)
Read I Timothy 6:17-19. What instructions are given for those with material wealth?
Discussion
After looking at the scriptures above, how does it make you feel to talk about Christians being wealthy? What factors should be considered when trying to gain wealth? How do you earn much in a righteous way?
Journal
Spend some time in prayer, thanking God for His blessings in your life. Now brainstorm, are there new ways I can creatively and righteously gain funds for the Kingdom?
